1. Match the optical direction first
UST ALR material is directional. Confirm whether your projector sits below the screen or is mounted above it, and buy the matching screen orientation. This is a hard compatibility issue, not a preference.
2. Choose deployment around the room
Drop-down screens work when overhead mounting is acceptable and the wall should clear when the screen retracts. Floor-rising models work when the screen should emerge from furniture or a floor cassette. Fixed frames work when you value simplicity over concealment.
3. Treat ALR percentage as a clue, not the whole answer
Higher claimed ambient-light rejection can be useful, but light direction, screen gain, viewing angle and projector brightness all interact. Direct sunlight remains a problem even for strong ALR materials.
4. Plan for flatness
UST projectors are unforgiving of waves because light arrives at a steep angle. A tab-tension system is therefore more than a luxury on a retractable UST screen; it is an important part of maintaining usable geometry.
5. Measure the full system
Do not measure only the image diagonal. Check cassette width, mounting clearance, black drop, screen travel, wall obstacles, speakers, furniture and projector throw geometry. A screen that technically fits by diagonal can still fail as an installation.
