When ALR is most useful
ALR is strongest as a living-room solution. It is designed to direct useful projector light toward viewers while reducing some unwanted room light. That helps preserve perceived contrast when you cannot turn the room into a blacked-out theater every time you watch.
When you may not need it
If the room is truly dark, viewing is mostly at night and the walls/ceiling are controlled, a conventional screen can be perfectly viable. In that environment, you are not paying ALR material to solve a large ambient-light problem.
UST-specific ALR is not generic ALR
A UST projector sends light from very close to the wall at a steep angle. The screen's optical surface must be designed to accept that light path. An ALR material intended for a conventional projector can reject the UST's own light instead of helping it.
Direct sunlight is different from ambient light
A bright room and direct sun on the image are not the same challenge. ALR can improve daytime usability, but if a sunbeam hits the screen surface directly, blinds or curtains are still the practical fix.
